Drive Ahead! review
The description of Drive Ahead!
Drive Ahead is something like a 2D version of Demolition Derby. Monster trucks battle it out in a playing arena, with the objective being to crush your opponent’s helmeted head. The gameplay mechanics are fantastic, while the physics are unlike anything you’ve experienced in monster racing.
Essence of Drive Ahead - 4/5
In Drive Ahead, you select a truck and fight against an opponent in a platformer arena. The object is to land atop your opponent’s head. There are hundreds of different types of cars, so the game always looks different. Your goal in the game is to establish dominance over your opponent, and landing a blow is harder than it seems. The arenas are different, and you’ll meet various obstacles as you play that make the task of smashing into your opponent more difficult. You can play matches in single player mode (i.e., against AI), or you can play with someone else on a single device or over Wi-Fi. If no one gets to 5 points first, the match goes into sudden death with increased difficulty in the arenas.
Graphics and Audio - 4/5
Drive Ahead is an innovative game, and its graphics, though set against a 2D backdrop, do stand out as unique. The game has a retro game aesthetic that you will notice and appreciate at first glance. The game does not look as stunning as some FPSs and RPGs that you can play on mobile, but the developers managed to simplify a difficult concept with grace. The soundtrack is upbeat and complements the visuals quite well.
Controls - 4/5
Since this is a 2D arena, the game doesn’t require you to do much other than moving back and forth. You can do this by swiping left or right of your current position or dragging to improve momentum. The controls feel intuitive and don’t require you to spend much time mastering them. The mechanics never play out quite the same even with the repetitive controls—the physics of the game stay largely independent from user influence.
Immersion - 4/5
Drive Ahead is a fun and relaxing game to be enjoyed at any time. It doesn’t give you much pressure to progress or unlock anything special, but it does offer a ton of different monster trucks and arenas. It’s somewhat different from what you might be used to on the app stores, but it has fun mechanics and something to keep you entertained if you have a few minutes to spare.
